This book is intended for students and practitioners in the fields of chemistry and physics. Atomic and Nuclear Chemistry, Volume 1: Atomic Theory and Structure of the Atom presents the modern ideas of the atomic theory and atomic structure against the background of their historical development. STRUCTURE OF THE ATOM. Matter has mass and takes up space. Atoms are basic building blocks of matter, and cannot be chemically subdivided by ordinary means. The word atom is derived from the Greek word atom which means indivisible. The Greeks concluded that matter could be broken down into particles to small to be seen. The exciting topic of Chemistry is explored, covering the atom--protons, neutrons, electrons, nucleus--as well as the basics of the periodic table, elements and atomic number. This is followed by an examination of individual elements, such as Lithium, Helium, Carbon, Sodium, Neon and Oxygen. An atom is made up of two parts, nucleus and extra nuclear part. Nucleus is the center of the atom with positive charge. Extra nuclear part means the space around the nucleus in which the electrons are distributed. The whole mass of the atom is located in the nucleus.

An atom is a positively charged sphere and the electrons are embedded in it. The Magnitude of positive and negative charge is same inside atom, so net charge inside an atom is zero. 2. Rutherford’s “α- particle scattering experiment” Rutherford designed an experiment, He used: α - Particles are doubly charged helium ion. arranged in areas called shells. The structure of a carbon atom, not drawn to scale. The nucleus is very small compared to the atom as a whole: as electrons are even smaller, most of an atom is. STRUCTURE OF ATOM 27 ••• to explain the for mation of dif fer ent kinds of molecules by the combination of different atoms and, ••• to underst and the origin and natur e of the characteristics of electromagnetic radiation absorbed or emitted by atoms. SUB-ATOMIC PARTICLES Dalton’s atomic theory was able to explain.

It took until the twentieth century, however, for scientists to invent instruments that permitted them to probe inside an atom and find that it is not, as had been thought, hard and indivisible. Instead, the atom is a complex structure composed of still smaller particles. Jim Al-Khalili OBE FRS is a scientist, author and broadcaster. He holds a Distinguished Chair at the University of Surrey where he is a Professor of Theoretical Physics and Public Engagement in Science. He is currently President of the British Science Association.
